NEW Dieting For Health

Article by Paul Hong

Perhaps the greatest reason to diet is for your personal health and happiness… Most of us with a weight problem understand the health risks that can result from carrying around excess weight. Sometimes those risks help us reach a turning point. When your chest starts to send you signals or you joints start to ach whenever you do a little exercise, you know it’s time for a change in your eating habits. Those eating habits might be from an addiction to certain foods, or maybe it’s a hidden emotional need. For some of us it is years of learned behavior and conditioning. As a chef, I had access to some of the best foods available in the market, but most of the time I would eat on the run, grabbing what tasted good, but was not necessarily the healthiest choice.

Dieting can become a dangerous lifestyle if your flip-flopping from one diet to the next always trying the latest and greatest “fix” to hit the market. You loose a few pounds; cheat just a little and gain back more that you lost. You switch diets to the newest one and try again. This is called Yo-Yo dieting and is very unhealthy.

High levels of cholesterol and fat increase the chances of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and gall bladder diseases among many others. Despite knowing the health risks, a lot people still lack the motivation to stick to a long-term diet and exercise plan.

Years of bad eating habits and faulty lifestyle practices make it difficult for many people to make permanent dietary changes. Unfortunately, some individuals strive to eat healthier only when sickness is already there.

Anything that gets you on your feet and away from the temptation of your refrigerator is a good thing when it comes to dieting and weight loss. You cannot lose a significant amount of weight by dieting alone. You must incorporate physical fitness into your daily routine in order to achieve those immediate and visually stunning results that many dieters are hoping to achieve.

The main thing to keep in mind is that proper weight is a life long journey. We don’t wake up one morning to find that we have gained too much weight over night, and we can’t expect the pounds to disappear overnight. We need to remember, we are on this journey for ourselves. As we lose the excess weight, we will feel better about ourselves. We will find more energy, and it could very well make our senior years some of the best years of our lives. It would be a shame to reach retirement only to be too ill to enjoy it because we did not take care of ourselves when we had the option to do it.

Having a healthy body takes not one month, not even a decade, but a lifetime of self-discipline and good lifestlyle practices. The individual always has a choice-to take the stairs or the elevator, to get the cake or the fruit salad, to watch TV or walk the dog. In avoiding a sedentary lifestyle, a person should choose an activity he or she truly enjoys.

When it comes to dieting there are very few diets that work. There are however, many lifestyle changes that when practiced consistently and aggressively will work. The thing to remember is that you are the one who must work because it is quite unlikely that any diet will.

There is growing awareness that the profound changes in the environment (eg in diet and other lifestyle conditions) that began with the introduction of agriculture and animal husbandry approximately 10000 years ago occurred too recently on an evolutionary timescale for the human genome to adjust. In conjunction with this discordance between our ancient, genetically-determined biology and the nutritional, cultural and activity patterns of contemporary western populations, many of the so-called diseases of civilization have emerged. In the US and most western countries, diet-related chronic diseases represent the single largest cause of morbidity and mortality. These diseases are epidemic in contemporary, westernized populations and typically afflict 50-65 % of the adult population, yet are rare or non-existent in hunter-gatherers and other less westernized people. Evidence gleaned over the past three decades now indicates that virtually all so-called diseases of civilization have multifactorial dietary elements that underlie their etiology, along with other environmental agents and genetic susceptibility. This talk will trace the origins of the Western diet and discuss the health implications. Dr. Cordain is a Professor in the Department of Health and Exercise Science at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado. His research emphasis over the past 15 years has focused upon the evolutionary and anthropological basis for diet, health and well being in modern
